A Merciful Rainbow (Vertical)
Here we have a striking, thoughtful frame of the Ryozen Kannon memorial in Kyoto. The combination of the towering statue, the colorful autumn foliage, and the rainbow creates a scene that is both spiritually uplifting and visually stunning which is appropriate since Kannon is the buddhist deity of compassion who grants deliverance from suffering to anyone who calls upon him. The statue stands 79 feet in height and was built in 1955 as a memorial to the Japanese and Allied soldiers who lost their lives in World War II. The temple grounds also include a hall with memorial tablets for the deceased and an eternal flame of peace.
Vibrant autumn trees and the luckiest of rainbows add a stunning backdrop that contrasts with the simple pale complexion of the statue. I was actually at another part of the Gion district taking a different shot after some early morning showers when I noticed this massive rainbow behind me. I immediately abandoned everything and ran to get a better vantage point when I stumbled upon the temple grounds and right into what would become one of my absolute favorite shots I have ever taken. As you'll often hear me say, much of the life of a photographer can be documented in happy accidents. Here we have exhibit A. The scene was practically begging me to put the camera down and absorb it all in, and maybe I should have, but when was a shot like this ever going to just fall into my lap again?
The perfect print for those who love concepts of peace and desire to have their space filled with the energy of peace and compassion for your fellow humans.
