Carmelo's Court: San Juan Puerto Rico

from $500.00

A slice of life at Carmelo Anthony's basketball court in San Juan Puerto Rico. This basketball court features regular rotations of color palettes and fits right in with the festive vibes of the historic La Perla neighborhood. A donation from NBA Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, the court is a beacon of hope demonstrating the power that sports can have on a community.

Nestled within the walls of the fortified city of Old San Juan, I couldn't help but fall in love with the contrast of a modern American staple infused with the architecture of Spanish colonialism. I have a personal obsession with unique basketball courts because I enjoy the sport so much and never hesitate to shoot local pickup games in interesting locations.

La Perla has seen a dramatic transformation since I was a kid. It was the ONE place in San Juan you were specifically told to avoid unless you belonged there. And I'll leave it at that. My father would recount stories about how my grandfather would loiter there after work among the less-than-upstanding friends he made there and my mother begged me to stay away from it when she learned I was going this year. But times change. The neighborhood has been revitalized. It is still rough around the edges, and I would not recommend going if you're going to act like a fool. But it now hosts a variety of bars, gastro pubs, and a very famous music video by Justin Bieber, so it's safe to say, it's come a long way.

I saw both locals and tourists alike gathering on the court to shoot some hoops and to celebrate Puerto Rican culture. This print is for anyone who loves experiencing new cultures, basketball, community spirit, and a contrast of architectural styles.
