The Instagram Lake
The most polarizing image I took during my trip to Italy. One that pulls at color swatch of emotions. This image came after begrudgingly arriving to Lago Di Brais in the Italian dolomites. I was in a mood because I overslept and missed the sunrise. I wanted to capture a scene of stillness at first light. The night before I had hiked all through seceda well into the night and had to drive an hour back to my hotel, so I was dead as a doorknob. Getting to this location around noon, I put myself in the mindset of "just enjoy the time here and forget about photography for a day" since I didn't think I could get a decent shot at that time of day.
The lake is no doubt absolutely stunning, but the atmosphere was almost ruined by the traffic congestion of loud, reckless, tourists and influencers that these paths were clearly not designed to handle. It was depressing to say the least and I found myself wishing for this lake to be lost in another time, just for the locals, before Instagram made it famous. I could do without remembering endless lines of identical couples posing in the exact same spots desperate for clicks and views. People would stop just long enough to take their shots and not bother to savor the beauty of their surroundings. But I guess I am part of the problem because as I was leaving, I was rewarded with some dramatic clouds and couldn't pass up the opportunity to climb up off the path, into the forest to get a higher vantage point and snap away at this scene.
So if you like nature, mountain landscapes and have a place in your heart for the Italian Alps, then I've got the print for you.
