Mies Van Der Rohe's minimalist tower is a masterclass in modernism, which is saying a lot given that it lives in Chicago, which many would argue is the heartbeat of American Architecture and is credited with being the birth of the skyscraper. Its simple clean lines and towering form are the essence of mid-century design, prioritizing function and form over flash and ornamentation. Alexander Caldwell's Vermillion sculpture Flamingo is the only decorative element and provides a convenient sense of scale. The sculpture rises 50 and weighs over 50 tons, yet it looks like a dwarf compared to the towering Kluczynski Federal Building. And thus the human elements in the frame look like insects juxtaposed. The reflective glass façade adds to the building's imposing presence, contrasting with the overcast sky and the subtle rain falling in the scene.
My favorite thing to do in the world is walk around new cities, get lost, and take photos, and Chicago is my favorite city in America. So I wasn't going to just duck for cover because of a little rain. I welcomed the authentic atmosphere it added to the photo.
